Overview

Provides front-line patient care to patients in all areas of the hospital. Performs patient assessments and utilizes appropriate protocols to care for patients. Performs outpatient testing, such as pulmonary function testing and six-minute walk tests as ordered. Assists patients in the performance of, and completion of pulmonary rehabilitation. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and reports any deficiencies to the Respiratory Therapy Director. Maintains documentation of all patient care provided. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Respiratory Therapy Director.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Patient Care

  • Provide patient care to patients of all age demographics from neonate to geriatric patients.
  • Operate all equipment according to prescribed order or approved protocol.
  • Administer medications according to order on the patient’s MAR, or verbal or written order.
  • Assess patients to determine appropriate plans of care according to approved protocols.
  • Make recommendations to the medical staff regarding appropriate care of the patient.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient.

Pulmonary Function Testing

  • Ensure all Pulmonary Function Testing is performed according to American Thoracic Society Guidelines.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to ensure correct testing is being performed and no unnecessary testing is performed.
  • Maintain cleanliness according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Replace consumable components between each patient.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

  • Receive orders for Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
  • Perform intake, ensuring all required components are complete.
  • Ensure appropriate insurance authorization is complete.
  • Perform exercises as prescribed in the patient’s Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP).
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers to ensure the patient’s needs are addressed as in the ITP.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree required. Bachelors preferred
  • National Board for Respiratory Care certification as a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist Kansas licensure as a Respiratory Therapist from the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications.
  • Minimum one year as a Respiratory Therapist preferred.
