JOB TITLE: Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist                       DEPARTMENT: Laboratory

 

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

Responsible To: Laboratory Supervisor
Responsible For: Does not supervise other employees
Interrelationships:  Works cooperatively with departmental staff, all hospital departments, and medical staff.
JOB SUMMARY:

Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Collects specimens from donors, checks quality of blood, and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of donors, following established standards and practices.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: Sufficient previous experience in appropriate field preferred. Education: Acceptable vocation and/or academic training

ASCP Certification or equivalent required.
Bachelor degree in science
Essential Functions:

Frequent, prolonged standing/walking
Motor coordination/manual dexterity
Moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.) Hand-eye coordination
Normal eye sight, with or without corrective lenses
Daily lifts supplies/equipment
Typical Working Conditions:

Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens
Exposed to odorous chemical and specimens
Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne pathogens
Occasionally exposed to radiation hazards
Handling of glassware, needles, other sharps

PATIENT AGE GROUPS SERVED:

Neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

 

JOB DUTIES:

Receives or collects specimens and labels them appropriately.
Prepares solutions, reagents and stains according to standard formulas and procedures
Adds reagents and solutions to body fluids as necessary and notes results.
Separates plasma and or serum from blood using centrifugation and labels/stores the plasmaor serum as required.

Cleans and performs preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment, glassware, and instruments.
Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
Participates in continuing education activities.
Assist physicians/pathologist, when necessary, in bone marrow aspirations, frozen sections, etc.
Observes safety, infection control, hospital and laboratory policies.
Participates in laboratory proficiency surveys.
Required to take call, work weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
Perform all technical and analytical procedures and functions of the following laboratory departments.
Hematology
Chemistry
Coagulation
Blood Banking e. Microbiology
Serology
Urinalysis
Electrocardiograms
Phlebotomy duties.
